In 1976, 18 year-old Massimo Carlotto (Daniele Liotti) is the only witness to a murder. Accused of being the killer, he is sentenced to prison. After serving several years, he is released pending a trial but decides to flee, beginning his life as a "fugitive". Forced to return to Italy after several years of hiding abroad, he becomes the protagonist in a complicated judicial process that finally ends with a presidential pardon in 1993.
