This movie is a true story. The hundred steps was the distance between the Impastato's house and the house of Tano Badalamenti (Tony Sperandeo), an important Mafia boss, in the small Sicilian town of Cinisi.
The movie is based on the life of Peppino Impastato (Luigi Lo Cascio), a young activist who decides to denounce the Mafia boss and the entire criminal system with a local journal and radio station. His activity incites the anger of Badalamenti and the local mafia. After announcing his candidacy in the local elections, Peppino was found murdered just a few days before the vote and, coincidentally, within days of Aldo Moro's assassination.
